PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Drake University is a comprehensive university located in Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa. The University, along with the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences rewards its students academically and personally. A principal feature of Drake's mission is commitment to a learning environment which enhances student success. With dedicated faculty and staff, as well as a broad range of student services, your educational experience at Drake will serve you well throughout your career.

Drake offers the four-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program. Degree combinations along with the PharmD include the Masters in Business Administration (PharmD/MBA), Masters in Public Administration (PharmD/MPA) and Law (PharmD/JD). Students apply to the business, public administration, or law graduate program after receiving admission to the professional pharmacy program. Many students also pursue minors or second majors in a variety of fields as well as concentrations in diabetes care.

Recognizing that professional program applicants come from a variety of institutions and educational and professional experiences, the pharmacy program faculty have put into place an admission process that will assure admitted students have the potential for academic and professional success. Since the philosophy of the pharmacy faculty is that students are individuals and not 'numbers', a process has been developed that allows the faculty the opportunity to consider other aspects of the application besides the academic profile. Thus, the application process for students transferring into the professional program is composed of two phases designed to assess applicant academic and professional capabilities. The first phase consists of a review of each applicant’s academic information and includes grade point average and PCAT score evaluations. The second phase of the application process includes an interview.

First Phase – Academic Profile Evaluation

Grade Point Average
The minimum grade point average for consideration into the professional program is a 3.00. However, admitted students will likely have achieved a higher grade point average. Students with foreign credentials and course work, other than study abroad, must submit official transcripts from each institution attended directly to Drake University. An evaluation report will not substitute for official records.

PCAT
For students who have not completed their pre-pharmacy course work at Drake, the PCAT will be used for the purpose of standardization of various grading practices at other institutions. The PCAT must be taken before the December 1st deadline for admission to the professional program the following fall. It is recommended that students, at minimum, score at the 50th percentile to be considered for admission. However, admitted students will likely have higher test scores.

Second phase: Assessment of Interpersonal Skills

Applicants may be invited for an interview providing their grade point average and PCAT scores meet the minimum requirements. However, depending on the strength of the pool, not all applicants who meet the minimum requirements may be invited to participate in the second phase of the application process. This process will assess the following interpersonal skills as determined by the faculty:

motivation
values/ethics
communication skills
self-learner abilities
desire for self-improvement
open-mindedness
professionalism

Interview
In order to assess these interpersonal skills, the interview is an integral part of the admission process. All interviews must be done in person. The interview will last for 30 minutes, and the applicant will have an opportunity to ask questions as well.  Interviews will be scheduled Monday - Friday.  Applicants will then have an opportunity to take a campus tour as well as meet with an Admission Counselor in the Office of Admission.
