PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Nova Southeastern University is the largest independent university in
the southeast. It has an enrollment of approximately 20,000, and is the
12th largest in the United States. Situated on a beautiful 232-acre campus
in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is it fully accredited by the Commission
on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award
bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral
degrees in a wide range of fields including, the health professions, law,
business, marine sciences, psychology, social sciences, computer and information
sciences, and education. In addition, the Doctor of Pharmacy program at
Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy has been granted full
accreditation status by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education
(ACPE), the national agency for the accreditation of professional programs
in pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy is a member of the American Association
of Colleges of Pharmacy.
Curriculum:
The curriculum of the College of Pharmacy stresses innovative delivery
and assessment methods. Practice experiences in community, hospital, service
learning and traditional pharmacy settings begin in the first semester
and continue throughout the student’s course of study. These experiences
facilitate real-life application of the material and provide opportunities
to integrate information learned in the classroom. The first two years
build a foundation in the medical and pharmaceutical sciences, including
anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutics, pharmacodynamics,
pharmacokinetics, and nonprescription therapies. Third year students focus
on applying the material they have learned. The entire fourth year consists
of full-time clinical rotations, where students practice Drug Therapy
monitoring, (or develop Drug Therapy monitoring skills in specialized
areas.)
Highlights:
Since admitting its charter class in 1987, the College of Pharmacy has:
• Led the nation in the level of enrollment of Hispanic doctoral
pharmacy students
• Developed residency programs in General Pharmacy Practice, Ambulatory
Care, and Infectious Diseases
• Developed a Drug Information Center to provide area health care
providers with current information on pharmaceuticals
• Developed two ambulatory care pharmacies for innovative teaching
and testing of pharmacist’s expanding roles
• Surpassed the national and state passing rates on the North American
Pharmacy Licensure Examination
Facilities:
The main campus of the College of Pharmacy is situated in the Health Professions
Division of Nova Southeastern University. This campus occupies a $ 70
million complex covering 21 acres. The division includes eight buildings
totaling over 900,000 square feet of space for classrooms, laboratories,
offices, the Health Professions Division library, an outpatient health
center, and a pharmaceutical care center. In addition, the College of
Pharmacy maintains separate sites in West Palm Beach, Florida and Ponce,
Puerto Rico. Each location has a team of site coordinators, administration,
faculty, and staff. Compressed interactive video technology and video
conferencing are used to provide lectures between sites simultaneously.
This technology provides for live interaction between lecturer and students
regardless of location. Identical handouts, texts and tests are used.
All students have access to the Health Professions Division Library, computer
labs, on-line learning resources, and the vast technological innovations
provided by NSU, which has been a leader in distance education programs
for many years.
