PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

In 2004, a College of Pharmacy in the State of Hawaii was approved by the State Legislature and, in 2006, the University of Hawaii Board of Regents appointed John M. Pezzuto, PhD as the founding Dean. The College has achieved Candidate status from the Accreditation Council for Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) in June 2008. According to ACPE, “Graduates of a class designated as having Candidate status have the same rights and privileges as graduates of an accredited program.”

The College of Pharmacy has two academic departments. One major area of departmental research is on natural products. There are many natural resources in the State of Hawaii and the Pacific Region, as well as the study of the various traditional healing practices of the Pacific. Research endeavors in the Department of Pharmacy Practice is more clinical in nature, investigating the effects of drugs in human patients. The main research focus will be to conduct clinical and economic outcomes research to evaluate the appropriate use of pharmaceuticals in order to improve patient health and well-being.

The overall mission of the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Pharmacy is to prepare competent pharmacy practitioners who are committed to patient care, reflect humanistic values, embrace change, and contribute to the growth of the profession. The College of Pharmacy embodies the spirit of community, in which cooperation, trust and mutual respect are valued. In line with this vision, the establishment of the College of Pharmacy at Hilo is truly a monumental event in the history of the University of Hawaii and, indeed, the State of Hawaii as a whole. Working together, we will succeed in building a preeminent College of Pharmacy that will be the legacy of the entire Pacific Region.
