Comments on above: The school does not specify which Humanities and Social Sciences courses you need to take, with the exception of one semester each of microeconomics and speech. These courses allow you to obtain a broad educational background prior to entering the Pharm.D. professional program. The School realizes that the actual number of credit hours for each content area may vary depending on the credit hours awarded by your prepharmacy institution for courses in these areas. Chemistry and biology courses must have been taken within the last 5 years; Chemistry, biology, and microbiology courses must have laboratory components. To enroll in prepharmacy course work, you must apply directly to an accredited college or university, not to the School of Pharmacy. Most institutions have designated prepharmacy programs and advisors.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, founded in 1841, is the third oldest school of pharmacy in the nation and the only pharmacy school in Maryland. The Baltimore Campus is one of seven professional schools located in Baltimore, a thriving center for life sciences research and community service. The Shady Grove campus is located at the Universities at Shady Grove with other University of Maryland Systems graduate and undergraduate programs, on a beautiful metropolitan campus that provides state-of-the art technology. Our students are in one class, one program, administered between two campuses. Through its education, research, and service programs, the School of Pharmacy strives to improve the health and well-being of society by aiding in the discovery, development, and use of medicines.

The School seeks a student body that is diverse in terms of ethnicity, sex, age, geographic and economic background, and religion. The enrollment statistics reflect the diversity of its student body: 11% African-American, 28% Asian, 54% Caucasian, 2.5% Hispanic and 3% International. An Admissions Committee consisting of faculty and students considers applicant academic achievement, PCAT scores, letters of recommendation, work experience, leadership experience and personal characteristics determined by an invited interview. Only those applicants who have attended U.S. accredited institutions for some or all of their pre-professional program are considered.

The School engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities, partnering with over 400 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies to provide services to citizens and practitioners around the State and across the nation. The School operates the 24-hour Maryland Poison Center and provides comprehensive medical information around the world through its web-based Drug Information Center.

The City of Baltimore and Montgomery County offers a multitude of activities and cultural events. Its close proximity to the District of Columbia, Philadelphia, New York City, and the mid-Atlantic coast seashores makes it a versatile and convenient location for students
