Program Description

Butler is a private, comprehensive university with over 5,000 full-time students enrolled in six colleges on our beautiful 295-acre campus. We're located in Indianapolis providing access to excellent, highly diverse clinical and other experiences within the pharmaceutical industry as well as the broader healthcare system. With a strong track record of creating highly qualified pharmacy practitioners since 1904, our current curriculum prepares students for practice in all professional environments including innovative pharmacy settings as well as post-graduate academic opportunities such as fellowships and residencies. Concentrations are available in Medical Spanish, Pharmaceutical Sciences or Patient Care Research, and Entrepreneurship.

Our mission is to provide innovative, interprofessional experiences with a liberal arts perspective to develop life-long learners serving society as dedicated health professionals and community leaders. We take pride in our students and alumni. Butler graduates consistently achieve a NAPLEX 1st-time pass rate significantly above the national average. Our 3-year aggregate pass rate is 91% compared to 80% nationally (2023-2025). Approximately 42% of our graduates go directly into the workforce after graduation with a 98% job placement (Class of 2024) six months after graduation. For those students choosing to pursue a post-graduate clinical residency programs, Butler's PGY 1 residency match rate was 92.5% in 2025 (national average was 84%). On average, 3-5% of Butler graduates pursue non-clinical fellowships and 1% go on to PhD programs!

We believe in experiential education providing significant laboratories and simulations for our students in the didactic portion in addition to a variety of 4-week pharmacy practice experiences; 2 introductory experiences and 10 advanced practice experiences at excellent sites in Indiana and nationwide with global health sites available.

While preference is given to students with the stated high level of academic performance, we believe in looking at students holistically in our admission process reviewing each applicant individually. There is more to preparing tomorrow's healthcare leaders both locally and globally than can sometimes be predicted by prerequisite or cumulative GPAs. Every suitable candidate, regardless of background, merits an individual review by faculty, many of whom maintain active practice sites and understand what patient's need in a provider first-hand. Therefore, we also look for positive academic trends in a student's record as a way to be assured that admitted students can be successful and thrive in our program.

Each qualified applicant in PharmCAS is reviewed for completion of foundational math and science prerequisites at the appropriate academic level allowing for slight modifications in the number of credit hours as appropriate based on offerings at the undergraduate institution.

All prerequisites MUST be completed prior to the August start date. Conditional admission into Butler's PharmD Program will be revoked if prerequisites are not completed on time. Admission preference may be given to candidates who have completed all prerequisite coursework and at least 26 credit hours of Butler's Core Curriculum at the time of application or if have indicated in their PharmCAS applications planned current/future semesters when any remaining pre-requisites will be completed.

All prerequisite courses must be approved for transfer into Butler University by the Office of Registration and Records. Criteria include that they are taken at a regionally accredited institution, are 100 level or higher, and the candidate earned a C- or higher in order to be eligible for transfer into Butler University. Butler University is taking special care in individually reviewing transcripts to ensure transfer students are not penalized by their inability to earn letter grades for academic classes during the COVID-19 pandemic and will take into account the current institution’s COVID-19 grading policies. Transcripts will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
If students entering Butler's online distance pathway do not have a Bachelor's degree prior to admission into the PharmD Program they must have 19 credit hours of general education courses (in addition to the 34 credit hours of required prerequisites) reflective of five elements of the Core Curriculum Areas of Inquiry (Analytic Reasoning, the Natural World, Perspectives in the Creative Arts, the Social World, Texts and Ideas) and 6 credit hours in English composition (i.e., First-Year Seminar). Two additional courses in Global and Historical Studies and one Well-Being course are required and will be taken during the program's professional phase.

Pharmacy is a rigorous course of study and the more informed students are about the profession prior to beginning their academic work, the more likely they will be successful. However, Butler recognizes the challenges, especially during the pandemic, of gaining access to practice sites. We still recommend students do what they can through websites like PharmacyForMe.org and interviews with practicing pharmacists even if outside their practice site.

As recommended by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, Butler University requires an interview for admission into the Pharmacy Program. The admissions criteria extend beyond academic minimums and include a measurement of these important attributes: verbal and written communication skills, understanding of the profession, commitment to patient care and professionalism. Other activities planned around the interview will include completion of a 30-minute proctored writing exercise. The Pharmacy Admission Committee reserves to right to request candidates complete other interview-associated assignments as applicable to allow the candidate to demonstration appropriate skills that the Committee can use in their deliberation.

Students admitted to Butler's PharmD Program must submit a $500 deposit within two weeks of their admission notification to hold their place in the class. This is refundable until May 1st prior to the August start for our Program. If an admitted student is granted a deferral to the following admission cycle, the deposit, unless previously refunded, will be applied to the following cycle.
